Toroidal flow stablization of disruptive high b tokamaks
نویسندگان
چکیده
Disruptive high b tokamak plasmas can be stabilized by the addition of a sheared toroidal flow. Nonlinear simulations demonstrate that confinement in flow-free high b tokamaks is rapidly destroyed by growing fingers of hot plasma that jet out from the center of the discharge to the wall. The added toroidal flow eliminates the growing fingers, maintaining confinement. As b increases further, the toroidal flow becomes less effective at maintaining a stable plasma. But a sound speed toroidal flow increases the critical value of b below which confinement is maintained without disruptions. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1475682#

Theory for Neoclassical Toroidal Plasma Viscosity in Tokamaks
Abstract. Error fields and resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes are ubiquitous in real tokamaks. They break the toroidal symmetry in |B| in tokamaks. Here, B is the magnetic field. The broken toroidal symmetry leads to enhanced neoclassical toroidal plasma viscosity and consequently the rate of the toroidal flow damping. The neoclassical toroidal plasma viscosity also results in a steady s...
متن کاملHigh-b equilibria in tokamaks with toroidal flow
We extend existing 2-D analytical high-b equilibrium solutions obtained by Cowley et al. [Phys. Fluids B 3, 2066 (1991)] and Hsu et al. [Phys. Plasmas 3, 266 (1996)] to the case of toroidally flowing plasma, assuming ideal magnetohydrodynamics and isothermal magnetic surfaces. Invoking the ordering bq 2 and M /q2 , we solve the boundary layer problem, re-obtaining the static solution in the zer...
متن کاملToroidal Momentum Confinement in Tokamaks
Theories for the toroidal momentum confinement in tokamaks have been developed. It is shown that the logarithmic gradient of the toroidal flow is a linear combination of logarithmic gradients of the plasma pressure and the temperature in neoclassical quasilinear theory. The fluctuation-induced toroidal stress consists of a diffusion flux, a convective flux, and a residual flux. The effects of a...

The goal of magnetic confinement devices such as tokamaks is to produce energy from nuclear fusion reactions in plasmas at low densities and high temperatures. Experimentally, toroidal flows have been found to significantly improve the energy confinement, and therefore the performance of the machine. As extrinsic momentum sources will be limited in future fusion devices such as ITER, an underst...
متن کاملNonlinear stability limit in high b tokamaks
Linearly unstable high b tokamak equilibria are shown to be nonlinearly stabilized by an axisymmetric flow containing both toroidal and poloidal components. As fingers of hot plasma produced by pressure driven ballooning instabilities start to convect out towards the bounding wall, an axisymmetric flow is self-consistently generated and opposes the growth of the fingers, maintaining confinement...
